DC2 Power Supply

Mid-level DC Voltage Power Supply with high quality linear regulator board
This is our mid-level DC power supply, called the DC2. This has been designed with no compromises within its compact case size, allowing us to select higher quality components than the DC1 uses. The performance of this exemplary PSU is above and beyond that of the DC1, and it is still very reasonably priced compared to our competitors. For a full list of upgrades that have been implemented on the DC2, see further down this page.

If you are looking for our reference level PSU, when only the very best will suffice, then look no further than our new DC3 Power Supply.
Our range of DC power supplies is an excellent way to upgrade any piece of equipment that requires a low-voltage DC supply, such as the Onkyo ND-S1 iPod dock, the Musical Fidelity V-DAC, various Logitech Squeezebox devices and Naim Audio equipment that uses the NAPSC. See the bottom of this page for examples of compatible equipment. The standard power supply shipped with equipment is almost always a cheap nasty black plastic box that either plugs into a mains socket and obscures adjacent sockets, or sits on the floor humming away to itself and injecting a whole load of unwanted noise into your power supply and your hi-fi equipment. They very rarely have features such as shielding, or any form of mains filtering or surge protection, which all adds up to mean that you are effectively strangling the performance of your equipment without realising it.
Custom HiFi Cables to the rescue! We have specially developed a very low-noise DC power supply, which is FULLY LINEAR and NOT a switched-mode supply. Switched mode supplies work by turning a high voltage on and off very quickly to simulate a lower voltage, this puts a large amount of high frequency noise into the output current. This is fine for PCs and laptops, but rubbish for hi-fi use, you can hear the loss of sound quality when you compare one to our linear PSUs! Our fully linear supply uses no high-frequency control whatsoever, instead we dissipate excess energy as a very small amount of harmless heat (usually only a few degrees above room temperature).
To power these units, we recommend the use of our PowerBlack IEC cable. The DC2 PSU is not supplied with an IEC power cable as standard - if desired, you can use a 'free' type (the sort that comes with various electrical equipment, most people seem to have several of these spare around their homes), or an upgraded cable from us for an enhanced listening experience.

When I received the DC2 Power Supply for my Temple Audio monoblocks, I must admit I wasn't expecting a world of difference as I never believed that such a product can effect sound quality (my reasoning behind that was that power supplies don't carry a music signal, but a simple voltage along with its harmonics and other power related noise). Other than a lower noise floor, I couldn't see how aspects such as bass, treble, sound-staging, imaging etc could be so altered by upgrading a PSU.


I’ll leave the technical explanation to others better equipped to explain how a mere power supply can have such a dramatic impact on music playback.


Boy was I wrong!


My first impressions:


As soon as the DC2 was connected and switched on... Eh? Is it on, my speakers I mean? I seriously couldn't get my head round all this......it worked! absolutely no noise floor! no ripple! (when stressed) and absolutely no hissing coming from my speakers, the best upgrade I have EVER done to my HI-FI, period.


The DC2 brings out the high end and lyrics SIGNIFICANTLY! and tightens bass tones, I still cant believe how much of an ACTUAL difference its made and how the hell it is making this difference in my system, WOW.


I heard ABSOLUTELY no noise coming from the speakers at all, no hissing, no buzzing etc.... Even with my noisy setup of electronics in my very crowded listening room!


After a full day of burn in time and many hours of listening, I have drawn a few conclusions about how the DC2 has effected my system.


- Better Dynamics


- Better Openness


- Better, Tighter, Bass tones - I finally understand what all these audiophiles keep saying!


- Transparency - Oh, how I wanted this!!


- Better Harmonics - for example: An acoustic guitar is struck, the after notes just ring with harmonic richness and don't just fade away. 

Everything just seems so much more natural and open (sorry for repeating) with more true intent to how the music was meant to sound and how my amps was suppose to sound. Also, everything within the audible spectrum (especially the midrange) seems to be LOUDER and CLEARER like someone opened a door blocking my speaker.


I am FINALLY enjoying my system after so many insignificant Hi-Fi upgrades and tweaks which really don't do anything.


Suffice to say, The DC2 power supply should enhance your system’s performance well beyond what their modest asking price would suggest.


All I can say is, Thank You Custom Hifi Cables, as I no longer need to look for another tweak of Hi-Fi upgrade again.

Upgrades of the DC2 compared to the DC1
- Uprated audio-quality toroidal transformer with a significantly higher power rating that that of the DC1 transformer, letting it provide a lot more 'punch' much more easily
- A new configuration of rectifier is used, which gives an extremely low ground impedance for the PSU, which in turn means the PSU can supply a constant voltage more easily under transient or difficult load conditions; the output is extremely low noise and ripple-free
- Larger reservoir capacitors than the DC1 for better smoothing of the AC input on the regulator board. We use Nichicon audio-grade reservoir capacitors, which are very highly regarded in the audio community
- A new design of input filter on the regulator board, to remove high frequency noise and harmonics from the AC input
- Nichicon KZ 'Muse' capacitors are used throughout the regulator board - these are some of the finest audio-grade electrolytic capacitors available, in fact they are the absolute best caps that Nichicon make! They are extremely highly-regarded, and are used to great effect in the new design
- Very low-noise metal film resistors are used throughout the design
- Wima polypropylene capacitors used at critical decoupling points - we use more than in the original DC1 design
- Silver-plated interconnection wires are used for optimum transfer of power around the different sections of the circuit boards
- A new circuit layout is used, to optimise flow of power from one section of the circuit board to the next
- A new, larger case is used to house all of the extra parts and larger transformer. It is in the exact same style as the DC1 case, but 60mm wider
- As with the DC1, you can choose the colour of the power LED! Blue, green or red are standard, or we can supply others to special order

Further Information
We have come up with our own in-house design for an extremely low noise power regulator circuit board, an improved design over the DC1 circuit, which has been met with rave reviews from our customers and beta testers. Our high-quality mains transformers are always specified far above the required power rating which ensures that they run cool, extending their lifespan and also meaning that they are much more capable of supplying large rushes of current when required, giving your music a much more open and expressive sound to it. This is all mounted inside an attractive aluminium case, with a power indicator LED fitted as standard - you can even choose the colour (red, green or blue) at no extra cost!
We custom-build each power supply to suit your particular voltage and current requirements - this information is usually printed on your existing power supply on on the back of the equipment, or in the manual, but if in doubt ask us and we can find out for you. A list of just a small selection of the products that we can power is given at the bottom of this page.
The rear panel of the power supply has a high quality IEC inlet with integrated power switch and fuse holder, and also the output socket with a removable output power cord (length can be specified by user) included with the supply.
The end power connector is also selected to be compatible with your equipment - in most cases, this will be either a 2.1mm or a 2.5mm DC 'tube type' connector, but we can get just about any type that you may need. If you are unsure as to what you need then just ask!

Note that the DC2 can supply up to a maximum of 1A continuous, or peaks of 1.5A, OR we can carry out some modifications and upgrades to increase output power to around 2A peak. This is an actual current rating, not to be confused with the current ratings given on cheap switch-mode PSUs that power low-current equipment. Your actual equipment probably draws less than 1A, but it might come supplied with a 3A power adaptor because that is what the manufacturer can get cheap from China that month. We have used DC1s to power equipment that came with 5A PSUs, so don't go by that figure on the standard PSU. Just contact us to see if your equipment is compatible, and we can advise which of our PSU range is the most suitable for your needs.
